There is a politics of knowledge in the academy. Just as feminism has challenged patriarchy and shown how patriarchy and androcentrism warp the world for everyone, men as well as women, so Black scholars must challenge the Eurocentric mindset not only for the sake of the Black community but also for the health of all scholarship. Bible and Culture in African ChristianityAbstract: The growth of Christianity in Africa in this century has been very spectacular. Africa is on record as the continent with the highest numerical Christian growth rate in the world. And the Bible has been identified as a major contributor to this phenomenal growth of Christianity in Africa. Given the oral tradition that informs the background of African Christians and the literary tradition that the Bible represents, the question of the interaction between the Bible and culture in African Christianity becomes an intriguing one. How is the Bible used in the cultural environment of Africa by African Christians? How do African Christian resolve perceived conflicts between the Bible and their cultural traditions? Reviewing the existing, operative model of interaction between the Bible and African cultures, the paper tries to show that it is patterned on a model of dialectic or mutual conflict. But the paper goes beyond the descriptive level to point out the deficiencies of the dialectic model and to propose an alternative model of dialogue between the Bible and African cultures as the way forward for African Christianity in the next millennium. |
